They are very widely accepted, but make sure you know your PIN. No one signs the receipts over here (although it is technically possible in the CR, unlike some countries, like, when you can't use your card unless you know the PIN). Also, be aware that US cards are way behind European ones in terms of technology.
US banks don't even put chips on most cards, while cards here have moved beyond chip technology all the way to contactless, meaning you don't even have to hand your card over to the cashier to pay - you swipe it yourself. Some people even have the contactless chips in their mobile phones and use those to pay instead of cards. You will realize when here how the US is in the dark ages when it comes to paying. Just a few years ago they weren't used widely at all, but they have taken off in popularity to the extent as described above. However, they might not take too kindly to being presented with a card in a local pub to pay for a couple of beers, for example, and be aware that depending on your deal with the bank card charges for transactions may be high, so always have cash with you (get that from an ATM, don't bring it with you) as it is always better when making smaller transactions. ChrissyKSewickley,I've been traveling for 3+ years now and all i had up to this trip was 1 credit card.I have not had any issues using it or getting $$ out of ATMs.note that since my card is an old swipe type, i will ask a store/restaurant employee if they will take my type of card. I will show them it doesnt have a chip on it and if they say no, i will get some cash.again, in the 3 years of traveling, i havent had any issues with getting $$ or using my 1 card.btw, i was in 3 weeks ago. Edited: 5 years ago. We have been in 6 nights.
I used my local bank ATM card to get money at the Bus station (needed a significant amount to pay for the apartment). That card has a PIN associated with it. I needed a bit more cash later and just used an ATM near the apartment. We will convert our remaining money to Euros tomorrow.I know the rate at the airport will be lousy but I have very few left!
As for credit cards.we have used ours all the time. It is a Capitol One (US issued). It has no Chip/PIN. I have signed charge slips for every purchase with no questions asked. They see I am an American.they know how behind times we are and just print a receipt for me to sign.
I have paid for most of the trip with the credit card.
